Digital Imaging Systems (DIS)is behind the technology that will bring a 9 megapixel camera to the mobile phone market. The DIS6931 camera modules will be unveiled this week in Germany at the Photokina festival.
Camera phone makers will begin to use the technology soon, I suspect. And while it might be a while off before we see 9mp camera phones in the US, I’m sure the euopean market will see the switch happen fast.
One interesting point from DIS, though. Apparently, if your phone already uses a DIS module for the camera, you can upgrade your existing phone with the new module. That’s pretty great.
DIS is touting their new technology, as it comes with an advanced auto focus capability and a much improved clik-to-capture speed. The slowness of my phone when it comes to capturing the image is always the main reason I hate to use it. So, I wonder how well the new DIS tech works.
I’ll keep my eye out for phones that are using this new tech, and we can see if it holds up to point-and-shoot quality work.
