Photokina is over… a look back
Posted by Andrew Nealon in Digital Cameras, Digital Photo Gadgets on 10 7th, 2008 |

I talked about Photokina, the big photography conference in Germany, a few times as I mentioned products that came out of it. And now that everything is said and done, reviews and recaps are starting to go up. Let’s check out some of the action.

The Star has a nice wrapup of some of the major product launches, including new SLR cameras from Canon and Nikon.

The Star talks about the new Canon:

However, the crowds were really gathered at one particular booth at the Canon showcase — that of the Canon EOS 5D Mk II.

We’ve already covered some of the most important features of this camera — its 21-megapixel full-frame sensor, improved speed and so on, but the most eye-catching feature of the camera has got to be its ability to capture 1,920 x 1,080pixel resolution videos.

Digital Photography Reviews did a nice in-depth interview series over the week. Check out a bit from thier Olympus interview about the new Micro Four Thirds camera:

Obviously this is a really early mockup, but how close is this to what you expect the final product to look like?

“Concept-wise, this is the direction, but the final design will be changed. The size should be the same as the mock up.”

So is this absolutely as small as a Micro Four Thirds camera can be?

“For the moment, yes. The key issue here is that in order to make [the mockup] happen a lot of components need to be reduced in size; components that do not yet exist. Not from our side, but also not from anyone else. And that’s exactly what we’re working on now.”

Adorama has a nice wrap up of new lenses that hit the market after Photokina. From their notes on a new Carl Zeiss shocker:

Carl Zeiss really took the Photokina cake with its incredibly huge, stupendously expensive Zeiss Apo Sonnar T* 1700mm f/4 lens designed to fit a 6×6cm Hasselblad 203FE. Weighing in at a staggering 564 pounds, it is claimed to be the largest telephoto lens ever made for non-military use, and it employs a unique focusing method (that is, servo controlled aiming and focusing mechanisms) because of the unprecedented weight of each element.

Coolio. there you have it. A few notes from this year’s Photokina. What is your favrite development from the show?
